About the Item

This pair of armchairs represents an iconic testament to postwar Italian design, designed by renowned architect and designer Franco Albini in 1951 and produced by the historic Vittorio Bonacina C. factory, specializing in the art of rattan weaving. Born as an "instant classic" of Italian design, the Gala has received prestigious awards: the Gold Medal at the 9th Milan Triennale, and exhibits at the MoMA in New York and the Vitra Design Museum. Albini may have dedicated it to his secretary Luisa Colombini, a symbol of a human and collaborative approach to the creative process. Today, reissued in contemporary editions by Bonacina 1889, it remains a versatile piece for living rooms, terraces, or gardens, combining minimalist elegance with intrinsic sustainability thanks to its natural and durable material. The structure is self-supporting and lightweight, free of excessive rigid or mechanical elements, with a dense, curvilinear weave that evokes the spontaneous growth of a climbing plant—Albini imagined the design as "a rush that rolls up, free from constraints, to form a seat." Each armchair has a sinuous, enveloping profile, with wide, arched armrests that blend harmoniously with the high, inclined backrest, creating a sense of fluid continuity. The seat is deep and welcoming, slightly inclined to encourage a relaxed posture, while the base is composed of four slender, slightly flared legs, connected by woven elements that ensure stability without weighing down the volume. In short, this pair of Gala armchairs is more than just a pair of armchairs, but a dialogue between nature and modernity: seats that invite relaxation, enveloping the body in a supple, poetic embrace, perfect for those who appreciate design that exudes history and craftsmanship.
