About the Item

A fine 20th-century pair of Gainsborough armchairs in the Chippendale manner, modelled after mid-18th-century English prototypes. The pair is conceived in the traditional “his and hers” format, with one chair slightly larger in scale, a convention historically intended to accommodate differing proportions while maintaining visual harmony. Each chair features a well-proportioned showframe with elegantly shaped arms and carved terminals, raised on square legs joined by H-stretchers. Each chair features a well-proportioned show frame with elegantly shaped arms and carved terminals, raised on square legs joined by H-stretchers. This handsome pair combines the authority of Georgian design with the practicality and robustness of 20th-century craftsmanship.
