About the Item

A sturdy set of four pitch pine Gothic revival Victorian altar chairs. The chairs exhibit a moulded top rail back rest finished at either end with ecclesiastical motifs with sweeping end supports. Leading to a thick angled seat with gently chamfered sides adjoining a shapely curved base united by horizontal stretchers. Strong pegged joints throughout and finished on curved block feet. The set would make wonderful dining chairs or even as a pair of distinctive side chairs. Excellent colour and grain presented in good country house condition. East of England, circa 1880.
