About the Item

Frank Gehry for Knoll "Hat Trick" Armchair The iconic "Hat Trick" chair was designed by Frank Gehry for Knoll International. Constructed of hard white maple veneers in 5cm wide, 1mm thick strips, laminated to 7 to 9-ply thickness with high-bonding urea glue. All wood grains run in same direction for resilience. Thermo-set assembly glue provides structural rigidity without the need for metal connectors, while allowing for ergonomic movement and flexibility. The back of the chair flexes for added comfort. This early example of the Hat Trick chair is signed and dated 8/14/93 beneath the seat. The chair is in great original vintage condition, with excellent joinery and craftsmanship. It is truly a fun and functional piece of art that you can use anywhere. Born in Canada, Frank Gehry (b. 1929) is a naturalized US citizen. He graduated from USC and Harvard Graduate School of Design before working as an architect. His work was known for its reliance on harsh, unfinished materials and its juxtaposition of simple geometric forms. Gehry soon also earned fame as a furniture designer. Inspired by the surprising strength of the wooden bushel basket, Gehry created his thoroughly original collection of bentwood furniture for Knoll in 1992. He sought to fully integrate material and design to create a structurally and aesthetically light masterpiece. The ribbon-like designs transcend the conventions of style by exploring, as did the great modernists, the essential challenge of deriving form from function. Today, Gehry's groundbreaking collection of laminated maple chairs and tables is included in the permanent collection of museums around the world.
