A rare opportunity to acquire an original Pattern No.7 'Wing-Back' chair designed by Fred Ward for Patterncraft. Ward put good design within reach of practical Australians post WWII. "In 1945, Fred Ward established Patterncraft in association with Australian Home Beautiful which enabled the home handyman, many of whom were returned servicemen, to make their own furniture simply and cheaply with very basic tools", Derek Wrigley, 'Fred Ward: Australian pioneer designer 1900-1990', p.23. The popular line of Patterncraft furniture went through several series. This chair is a Pattern No.7 Wing-Back chair from 1948. The slanted tops of the back supports hint at 'wings' and the sturdy arms give the chair an enveloping feeling of depth. We suggest a button-tufted cushion with piping to ensure the chair is in keeping with the original design. If you're interested in having such cushions made for this chair, please discuss with us. We can facilitate for a reasonable cost. The chair is compact and its tidy form bears a strong relationship to Japanese design in its ingenuity and simplicity, as well as the quality of wabi-sabi (beauty of imperfection). Knowing the chair was constructed at home by a practical, thrifty Australian, post WWII, from a pattern purchased by mail only makes it more appealing. The timber is Mountain Ash. It shows deep patina of age and use. It appears to have had multiple wax coatings, which we've brushed up to a low sheen. In the 1940s Mountain Ash timber was sourced from the hills to the North East of Melbourne. Condition is good, with some minor, stable splits to timber due to drying and aging. These cracks are illustrated in images and do not affect structural integrity. As it was homemade, the craftsmanship is not perfect. After 73 years of use, the timber has shrunk a fraction and there is a teeny bit of play in the joints so, though they are stable and strong, there's a very slight movement in the chair overall. We wouldn't go so far as to call it a wobble, as much as a tiny lateral movement. Seat height 27cm/10.6" without cushion. With cushion recommended 13cm thick, seat height = 40cm/15.74".

A splendid brass example of the Chiavari style first developed in the coastal town of Chiavari, south of Milan, Italy. This particular specimen is in excellent condition, with a lovely recent restoration of the upholstery, well cushioned, in a tasteful dark green velvet. The chair is in very sound condition and is of a higher quality than others we have handled - notably the shaping of the feet and the back are particularly fine. The original Chiavari chair is a delicate-boned creature in light-weight timber, designed to be both light and strong.
