About the Item

Pair of French Art Deco armchairs from the early 20th century. Made from solid veneered wood with a dark patinated finish and a strict geometric structure. The legs are shaped from an eight-faceted hexagonal profile, continuing the angular language of the frame. Seats and backrests are reupholstered in beige curly cowhide, contrasting with the dark wood tone. The design shows a combination of French Art Deco and Dutch modernist influences, stripped to a minimal expression. The chairs feel almost Rietveld-adjacent in spirit, though executed in a warmer and more luxurious French idiom. Likely intended for a refined interior rather than mass production. The pair is reminiscent of the work of Raymond Nicolas (French Art Deco architect), who is not a widely known designer, although his work was published in the Art Deco magazine “Mobilier Décoration” in December 1927. The article, L’Architecture et les Ensembles Mobiliers de Raymond Nicolas, page 120, shows the salon of Mme Deletang, where a sofa set appears in a similar visual language, although our armchairs are more stripped down and less sofa-like, with no loose cushions. Designed and made in France, circa 1925. Provenance: Private Collection Paris. Shows wear consistent with age, good vintage condition. Overall dimensions: Height: ± 77 cm Width: ± 63 cm Depth: ± 47 cm
