About the Item

A French Louis-Philippe ducal armchair, circa 1830, retaining its original beech show-frame and currently covered in calico in preparation for reupholstery. The chair is distinguished by its tall, supportive back with pronounced lumbar support, well-shaped arms, and a deep, rounded seat—features associated with the generous proportions favoured in French aristocratic interiors of the period, an early expression of the comfort-focused designs that would later be formalised by English makers such as Howard Sons. It stands on its original ebonised front cabriole legs, with straight tapered back legs, all retaining original period brass castors. Traditional 19th-century upholstery foundations remain intact, including hand-tied webbing and natural fibre fillings. A good, honest example of an early-19th-century French upholstered armchair, offering strong presence and decorative potential.
