About the Item
A George III style carved mahogany Royal Windsor armchair in the Hepplewhite style. This unusual model of Windsor chair dates from the early 20th century but is based on a period model. The splat is carved with neo-classical detailing of swags, flowerhead, acanthus scrolls and husks. The pierced spindle filled back and sides with short outswept arms are above a moulded saddle shaped seat and supported on cabriole legs joined by stretchers and terminating in pad feet. The chair is stamped to the underside with chair maker's initials G.E. The chairs is 61.5cm wide, the seat is 55cm wide at the widest point and 39cm wide at the narrowest point with an overall depth of 43.5cm. The floor to seat measurement is 42.5cm and the overall hight of the chair is 104.5cm.
This is a later copy of the celebrated model from the 18th century of which there are few known examples. This select group of chairs includes one in the Frederick Parker Collection which is illustrated in Ivan Sparks 'The Windsor Chair' Spur Books, 1975, p.53 and two examples formerly in the collection of Sir Frederick Richmond BT and sold Christie's South Kensington, 27 June 2001, lots 344 and 345.
