About the Item
There is no record of exactly when the first Grotto furniture was created; furniture with similar decorative elements were popular in the Renaissance period, designed for the artificial grottos of Royal palace gardens. These pieces of furniture had Mediterranean-themed carved features: shells for chair seats and backs or table surfaces, dolphin-shaped legs, sea horses, algae, coral, sea snakes, as well as make-believe creatures, such as winged horses or small dragons. Usually the wood would be stained a walnut color or would be covered with a poliment silvering, with gold and brown painted highlights. Records do exist of Grotto works produced in Venice from 1890 until production ceased in 1930. These pieces can often be found in museums and auctions.
Michael Von Jakubowski has created a new piece, in hand-carved wood, painted with a poliment silver technique, which is true to original production techniques and in the style of those precious Venetian masterpieces.
