About the Item

Hendrik Wouda for H. Pander Zn, pair of armchairs, oak, corduroy fabric, The Netherlands, 1930s These striking Art Deco armchairs were designed by Dutch architect and designer Hendrik Wouda during the 1930s for H. Pander Zn. Executed in oak, the chairs display Wouda’s characteristic balance between geometric rigor and structural solidity. The closed sides of the legs and frame create a compact, architectural silhouette that feels both sturdy and sculptural. The seats have been newly upholstered in a soft corduroy fabric, which complements the warmth and grain of the oak beautifully. Hendrik Wouda (1885-1946) was a Dutch designer and architect. After studying at the Academie voor Beeldende en Technische Wetenschappen and the Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague, Wouda started working at the office of the esteemed architect H.P. Berlage. During World War I, Wouda began working for the renowned furniture company Pander Zonen in The Hague. Here, he developed a very statuesque style that was inspired by the American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. This style, also known as the New Hague School, is a movement that emphasized geometric form language, simple proportions and constructivist decorations. De Stijl played a major role in the development of the formal language and use of colors of this movement.
