A pair of iconic chairs by Danish designer Henning Kjærnulf, often called the “kurulstol” or kurul chair. The Curule seat is a foldable and portable chair with curved legs, the roots of which go back to ancient Rome, where, apart from everyday uses, it was a symbol of political and military power. This pair of armchairs combines a traditional kurul design with a modern twist thanks to the combination of curved legs with an upholstered seat and backrest. The oak armchair frames are carved in a unique way, showing the skills of the designer and cabinetmaker who made these beautiful wooden frames. The stable appearance and organic character enhanced by the expressive graining of beautiful oak, from which the wooden elements of these chairs are made, are emphasized by high-quality sheepskins, which were used for upholstery. Kjærnulf’s designs are easy to spot in a crowd thanks to his originality, making his designs such as the razor chair and this model eternally unique. These chairs were manufactured by EG Kvalitetsmobel in Denmark in the 1960s. Condition: In excellent vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. About the Designer: Henning Kjaernulf (Danish, 1911-1975) Midcentury Danish designer and architect Henning Kjaernulf. Little is known about Henning, his biography is shrouded in mystery. His wooden designs are perfect, one of a kind. The designs he has developed are characterized by high-quality craftsmanship and clean, modern Danish lines with sculpted edges and shapes. Unique shapes, such as the razor-shaped backrest of the chair, distinguish Henning Kjaernulf from other Danish designers. The fact that there is so little information about the designer is surprising because his dining sets and lounge chairs and armchairs are often sought after by connoisseurs. This gives a hint of a secret preserved in Henning Kjaernulf’s beautiful furniture designs, which are able to show how dedicated and talented he was in designing furniture.
