About the Item

This sculptural armchair, reminiscent of Emil Fahrenkamp's refined yet quietly expressive modernism, stands at the intersection of functionalism and subtle decorative intent. Like Fahrenkamp's best architectural work - most notably the Shell House in Berlin - it balances rational structure with soft curves and an understated elegance that resists austerity. Fully upholstered in seat, back and back, the chair's silhouette is defined by exposed structure and proportion. The rosewood armrests are lightly sculpted and curve forward with a quiet confidence. Neither ornamental nor anonymous, they embody the restrained poise that characterized the best interiors of the New Objectivity period. The chair's construction is precise and economical, but not austere. It reflects a modernity tempered by craftsmanship - a design language that avoids both sentimentality and brutality. Its quiet presence speaks of a world where clarity of line was understood as a moral and aesthetic choice. Although less internationally known than some of his contemporaries, Fahrenkamp was a key figure in interwar German architecture. His interiors often featured bespoke furnishings that, like this chair, fit into the architectural rhythm of a space without dominating it. The piece likely originated in such a context - a commissioned interior where architecture and furniture were conceived as a whole.
