About the Item
Italian space age armchair in leatherette and chromed metal, 1970s. Space age armchair in chromed steel tubular and leather. The structure is composed by a unique curved tubular, where is fixed the black seat, with smooth finiture on the front and raw on the back. Two cushions for the legs and the head are fixed to the whole structure, with a yellow color leatherette cover, tending to a light orange color, and help the usage of the object, since its seat is quite low. Both are fixed through an hook-and-loop closure and a zip. Using the object with no cushions, all the components needed for their fixing remain visible.

Modernist Lounge Chair, Camel Velvet, 1970s
Located in Lonigo, Veneto
Modernist lounge chair in tubular chromed steel, camel velvet, Italy, 1970s
With their sleek cantilever structure and soft round forms, these modernist lounge chairs encapsulate the radical spirit of 1970s Italian design. The chromed tubular steel frame defines a low-slung silhouette that balances structural clarity with sculptural presence. A continuous loop forms the base and supports both seat and backrest, showcasing an expressive mastery of bent metal—a material language that traces its roots back to the revolutionary designs of Le Corbusier and Charlotte Perriand in the 1930s, such as the iconic LC7 chair for Cassina.
The round backrests and wide seats are upholstered in a camel velvet, contributing warmth and tactility to the otherwise minimal composition. The contrast between the industrial frame and the sensual upholstery echoes the experimental ethos of postmodern design, reminiscent of the aesthetic explorations of Giandomenico Belotti or Cini Boeri, whose work often blended technical rigor with emotional appeal.
Though the author of this piece remains unidentified, the chairs stand out as emblematic of the avant-garde production of the Italian furniture scene during the late 20th century, when designers sought new formal languages through material innovation and structural boldness. Comparable in spirit to Belotti’s “Spaghetti” chair...
