About the Item

This elegant early 20th-century Italian armchair, often referred to as a Voltaire chair, showcases the style of Louis Philippe and the refined restraint characteristic of construction during the Art Deco period. Crafted from richly patinated walnut, the chair features a tall, gently arched back and gracefully contoured cabriole legs that lend a sense of poise and lightness. The generous seat and padded armrests are upholstered in a neutral leather, accentuated by antique brass nailhead trim that highlights the chair’s crisp lines and subtle curves. Named after the philosopher Voltaire, these high-backed armchairs became popular in the mid-19th century for their comfort and dignified silhouette—favored in French salons and reading rooms for both style and repose. A timeless blend of comfort and sophistication, this armchair would bring understated European elegance to a study, living room, or bedroom setting.
