About the Item

An elegant bentwood armchair by the renowned Austrian manufacturer J&J Kohn, dating to the turn of the 20th century. This chair features the iconic steam-bent beechwood frame with a rich, dark finish and a finely woven cane (rattan) seat and backrest. The design is a classic example of the Art Nouveau and Jugendstil styles, characterized by its flowing lines and the decorative, curvilinear shape of the backrest and armrests. The chair is marked "J.&J. KOHN Teschen , AUSTRIA" on the underside, a crucial detail confirming its authenticity and origin. This timeless piece would make a sophisticated addition to a study, a living room, or as a striking accent chair. It represents a beautiful blend of historical design, masterful craftsmanship, and enduring style. Dimensions W: 53.0 cm / 20.9 in, D: 58.0 cm / 22.8 in , H: 94.0 cm / 37.0 in SD: 47.0 cm / 18.5 in , SH: 47.5 cm / 18.7 in Jacob Josef Kohn, also known as J. J. Kohn, was an Austrian furniture maker and interior designer in Vienna. Jacob Kohn (1791–1866) together with his son Josef Kohn (1814–1884) founded the enterprise in 1849. Kohn would later rise to become one of the leading furniture makers in Austria-Hungary, becoming one of the leading competitors of Gebrüder Thonet. Kohn worked together with artists of the Wiener Werkstätte and Josef Hoffmann in the design of many pieces. Kohn merged with Mundus in 1914, which in turn merged with Gebrüder Thonet in 1921 to become the world’s largest furniture manufacturer. The Kohns' received many awards and prizes for their work. They received a Spanish Royal Warrant of Appointment as purveyors of the royal house (Proveedor de la Real Casa). Kohn's works can be seen in a number of museum today, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna and Disseny Hub Barcelona.
