Exceptional Janine Abraham
Dirk Jan Rol Rattan Lounge Chair, Edition Rougier, c.1955
An outstanding example of French mid-century design, this rare lounge chair was designed by Janine Abraham and architect Dirk Jan Rol and manufactured by Edition Rougier around 1955. The elegant basket-seat shell in painted white rattan rests on a beautifully organic wooden frame, perfectly capturing the designers’ balance of sculptural form and modern comfort.
This is among the very few painted examples known worldwide, making it a truly special and highly collectible piece. The chair remains in excellent original condition, with no breaks or repairs to the rattan. The white paint has developed a lovely natural patina, further enhancing its authenticity and vintage appeal.
Abraham
Rol were celebrated figures of postwar French design, awarded second prize at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs in 1958, and their iconic “Soleil” armchair won the Gold Medal at the Brussels World Exhibition the same year.
