About the Item

Jorge Zalszupin (1922–2020) "Commander" Armchair, 1973 Designed in 1973, the "Commander" armchair marks a bold departure from Jorge Zalszupin’s signature use of rosewood and richly grained veneers. Here, the Brazilian modernist embraces industrial materials with a futuristic flair. The structure is crafted from black lacquered aluminum, while the seat and backrest are formed from a single fiberglass shell, offering both flexibility and comfort. The striking silhouette—defined by continuous lines connecting the legs and armrests—recalls the visual language of science fiction, evoking the aesthetic of Blade Runner or Star Wars. It is a rare and visionary piece within Zalszupin’s oeuvre, blending ergonomic innovation with sculptural force. Preserved in original condition. Restoration available upon request.
