About the Item

This exquisite “Les Pins” walnut armchair by Louis Majorelle exemplifies the artist’s refined interpretation of nature within the Art Nouveau movement. The rosewood-veneered seat rail is adorned with delicately lathe-turned spindles that evoke the rhythmic structure of pine branches. The arm supports and feet are intricately carved with pinecone-scale motifs—an emblematic detail that reflects Majorelle’s fascination with the flora of the Vosges forests surrounding his native Nancy. The seat, upholstered in a rich forest-green fabric, harmonizes beautifully with the warm tones of the walnut, reinforcing the chair’s organic unity and evoking the quiet grandeur of a pine grove. Item #: F-19108 Artist: Louis Majorelle Country: France Circa: 1904 Dimensions: 29.875" height, 26.125" width, 23.625" depth. Materials: Walnut wood, Green upholstery Provenance: Former collection of Marie Barres (Madame Emile Demange), sister of the writer Maurice Barres (1862-1923), friends of the family Majorelle. Literature: Alastair Duncan, Majorelle, Flammarion, Paris, 1991, model to be compared with that reproduced on p.109. - Alastair Duncan, The Paris Salon 1895-1914 - Volume III Furniture, Antique Collector's Club Editions, Woodbridge Suffolk, 1996, model to be compared with that reproduced on page 407. Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes: Louis Majorelle revolutionized furniture design by introducing exotic wood inlays known as marquetry in his furniture designs. These light woods create a similar contrast to the tortoiseshell and ebony marquetry popularized in the late 1800s. Majorelle further improved his furniture design by excluding the stretchers on the legs of his chairs, making for a more delicate yet modern look.
