This original and one-of-a-kind 19th-century Baroque-style carved armchair has been reimagined by Australian designer Wesley Smith as a collectible statement piece for contemporary interiors. Expertly restored and reupholstered, the chair features richly symbolic, surrealist imagery that fuses classical religious iconography with elements of Mexican culture and avant-garde expression. Through his distinctive artistic lens, Smith transforms this historic armchair into a compelling narrative object—bridging the sacred and the surreal in a bold, modern context.
The gracefully carved frame, finished in deep black, maintains its Rococo heritage with curved legs and ornate detailing.The seat back displays a powerful religious image of the Virgin Mary with cherubs and the inscription “México Sus Milagros,” invoking both faith and cultural heritage. The seat bursts with theatrical opulence—a crowned skull surrounded by red roses, candlelit devotionals, and a chorus of cherubic figures.
