Johan Bender, Arkitekt Hack Kampmann, p. 132, illustrating and discussing the construction of Aarhus Customs House.
Hack Kampmann was a prominent Danish architect renowned for his contributions to National Romantic and early Nordic Classicism styles. Educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he became a leading figure in Danish architecture. His notable works include Aarhus Customs House, Aarhus Theatre, Marselisborg Palace, and the Copenhagen Police Headquarters. Kampmann’s designs often incorporated elements from his extensive European study trips, blending traditional Danish forms with international influences.
Completed in 1898, Aarhus Customs House is considered one of Hack Kampmann’s masterpieces. Situated on the city’s harbor front, the building’s design was inspired by Kampmann’s study trip to Chaumont, France, reflecting his ability to blend Danish architectural traditions with European influences. The structure features a prominent square tower flanked by two polygonal towers, incorporating the city’s coat of arms into its facade design.
