About the Item

Stunning pair of sculptural armchairs in solid oak and natural leather made by Danish Master Cabinetmaker Lars Møller, Copenhagen in the 1930s. The chairs are modern but with a playful expression and many fine details like the skilfully carved armrests with a baroque touch. The oakwood has an amazing grain structure and the leather a deep and beautiful patina. The leather is secured by brass nails. NOTICE: we have a matching set of 8 dining chairs in stock. Lars Møller was a renown cabinetmaker in the first part of the 20th century and his works were each year represented at the annual Cabinetmakers Guild Exhibition. In Denmark at the beginning of the 20th Century, furniture of the highest quality was produced by cabinet makers who had received a long formal training. On the whole their business was to produce well-made furniture for a wealthy, established and, generally, conservative middle class. Cabinet makers could reproduce traditional designs but important pieces would be designed by architects, most of whom, themselves, came from the wealthy middle class. Furniture designers as a separate profession only emerged from the academic system in the early 20th Century. Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi (The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts) had been founded in 1754 and there were separate schools for Architecture, Painting and Sculpture from its inauguration but a Department of Furniture Design was only opened in 1924 with Kaare Klint as head.

Mid-Century Danish Niels Moller Model 56 Oak Armchair for JL Mollers Mobelfabrik
By Neils O. Möller
Located in Shepperton, Surrey
A very handsome and finely crafted chair designed in the early 50’s by Niels Moller. This design is quite hard to come by, especially so offered in Oak as the majority were produced in Teak. The timber on this chair exhibits a wonderful honey glow and is in excellent condition. Just reupholstered using the finest black leather sympathetic to the original leather used. Also particular attention had been paid to keeping the seat padding nice and slim, as it should be, there is nothing worse than seeing these chairs incorrectly upholstered with overstuffed seats that detract from the clean lines. This chair would make a fantastic desk chair but could also be placed in other rooms around the house as a statement side chair...
