About the Item
Very rare and refined pair of armchairs attributed to architect M.G. Bindesbøll, crafted in Denmark around 1840. The chairs reflect the emergence of Danish historicism—where classical ideals met a distinctly national sense of craftsmanship—and stand as an early example of the union between architecture and furniture that would come to define Danish design.
Constructed with graceful proportions and sculptural detail, these armchairs embody Bindesbøll’s deep understanding of form and ornament. Their balanced silhouette, restrained decoration, and architectural precision reveal the same sensibility found in his celebrated buildings such as Thorvaldsens Museum (1848).
Measurements (each):
• Height: 91 cm (35.8 in)
• Width: 50 cm (19.7 in)
• Depth: 50 cm (19.7 in)
• Seat height: 45 cm (17.7 in)
Michael Gottlieb Bindesbøll (1800–1856) was one of Denmark’s most influential architects and designers of the 19th century. A central figure in the Danish Golden Age, Bindesbøll combined classical rigor with artistic experimentation, shaping the visual identity of Danish architecture and decorative arts. His influence extended to contemporaries such as Constantin Hansen, Jørgen Roed, and Georg Hilker, whose shared ideals of proportion and ornament also informed furniture of this period.
This pair of armchairs is a rare surviving example of Bindesbøll’s approach to furniture—architectural, sculptural, and deeply humanistic—embodying the roots of Denmark’s later modern design tradition.
