About the Item

The Fiorenza armchair, designed by Franco Albini in the early 1950s, is a hallmark of post-war Italian design and was first produced by Arflex in 1952. The chair’s elegant frame is crafted from solid, steam-bent ash, forming the distinctive “X”-shaped side supports that give the piece its sculptural yet lightweight appearance. Upholstered here in a refined graphite-blue wool, the Fiorenza features a high wing-back and integrated arms, a combination that balances visual poise with exceptional comfort. Albini’s design was celebrated at the time for its ergonomic sensibility and for taking advantage of new upholstery technologies: the Fiorenza even appeared in 1950s Pirelli advertising as an example of the potential of foam rubber and shaped polyurethane in modern seating. Produced in several wood and upholstery variants over the years (including early examples in walnut with brass details), original Fiorenza chairs remain highly sought after by collectors and institutions as iconic examples of mid-century Italian craftsmanship and design thinking.
