About the Item

These armchairs by Joaquim Tenreiro are nothing less than specatcular. The structure of these two chairs is made with painted tubular metal. It features a mustard suede upholstery. The iron has been repainted and refinished and the seats have been reupholstered so that the chairs are in excellent condition. The fabric backrest extends to the armrests, which makes these chairs very comfortable. This specific model was designed with a wood or metal frame, the metal frame is more rare to find. The clean and sleek design of these chairs make them a perfect addition to any interior design style. The last images showcase the same model in contemporary publications. Joaquim Tenreiro was born in Portugal in 1906 but spent most of his life and career in Brazil, where he became one of the country's most celebrated furniture designers. He started his career as a cabinetmaker and set up his own furniture workshop in 1943. He quickly gained recognition for his innovative designs and his use of traditional Brazilian materials like cane and jacaranda wood. His work was heavily influenced by past furniture-making techniques and emphasized the importance of technical mastery, aesthetic experience, craftsmanship, and cultural context. He often used clean, simple lines and geometric shapes in his furniture designs, which were a departure from the ornate and heavily decorated pieces that were popular at the time. His work was also notable for its functionality and practicality, as he believed that furniture should be both beautiful and useful. Tenreiro retired from furniture design in the late 1960s to focus on painting and sculpture, but his legacy in furniture design lives on. He died in Itapira, Brazil in 1992 at the age of 86.

Brazilian Modern Armchairs in Hardwood Grey Velvet by Joaquim Tenreiro Brazil
By Joaquim Tenreiro
Located in New York, NY
Available right now, this very Brazilian Modern armchair pair in hardwood and gray suede designed by Joaquim Tenreiro in the sixties is gorgeous! The model is called “Concha” (Shell in Portuguese). The armchairs feature a hardwood structure upholstered in gray velvet and four toothpick legs. The back (the “shell”) is curved and ends in the arm rests. What makes these armchairs so special is the beautiful design iconic from Joaquim Tenreiro (Publications attached also). The original upholstery was also suede so we decided to do something similar. The furniture set photo showcases the armchairs with the matching “Concha” sofa (sold separately) and a Jean Gillon Rodeio...

Brazilian Modern Armchairs in Fabric, Hardwood Metal, Carlo Hauner, 1950s
By Carlo Hauner
Located in New York, NY
Available now, this Mid-Century Modern armchair set in velvet, Hardwood & Steel designed by Carlo Hauner in the fifties is perfect! This gorgeous set features a steel structure painted in black and a seat & body backrest in new gray velvet upholstery with three buttons and delicate Brazilian Rosewood (known as Jacaranda) arms. The restoration of the set took a few months because when I bought it the armchairs didn't have the Jacaranda arms, and every collector knows that the value of a piece is on the integrity of the piece, meaning original pieces and method. Finding Hauner’s wood arms took me to many antique markets until two months after I found the wood arms in a shop specialized in vintage furniture in Rio de Janeiro’s city center. Now the piece is complete! These armchairs are so awesome that we’ve paired them in the gallery with other pieces and are always spectacular. The first furniture set showcases the armchairs with Scapinelli’s famous Acqua coffee table and Jorge Zalszupin Pullman sofa. The second image has the set next to Celina Decoracoes four seat sofa and a delicate Scapinelli coffee table. The third image has one armchair next to Sergio Rodrigues’s Sabara Rosewood trunk...
