About the Item

A pair of bentwood armchairs, model 715/F, conceived by Gustav Siegel in 1899 and produced by Jacob Josef Kohn in Vienna around 1905. The chairs measure 76.5 cm in height, 53 cm in width and 55 cm in depth. They are executed in bentwood and newly reupholstered with a Backhausen textile (a 1905 design by Koloman Moser). Both remain in their authentic state, the surfaces having been lightly refreshed. The pieces originate from Vienna. This model, designed for the Exposition Universelle in Paris (1900), earned Siegel the gold medal and is today considered one of the most significant armchair designs of the Viennese Secession. Its innovative language of form influenced contemporaries such as Otto Wagner, Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser and Marcel Kammerer, who drew upon its clarity as a reference point in their own work. Published and documented in: Giovanni Renzi, Il mobile moderno: Gebrüder Thonet Vienna, Jacob Josef Kohn, 2008, pp. 28–29 Jacob Josef Kohn Catalogue (1904), p. 3
