Pair French Mid-Century Modern Grid Back Cherry Lounge / Armchairs, Rene Gabriel
By Rene Gabriel
Located in New York, NY
An Iconic pair of French Mid-Century Modern armchairs, club or lounge chairs in solid cherry by Rene Gabriel, circa 1948. The chairs feature angled armrests and angled saber legs with stunning grid form back rests which propel the chairs forward into a distinctive modern sensibility. The grid back form has since become an emblematic design of Rene Gabriel.
In addition, Gabriel initiated a design innovation as he was one of the first designers to design the chairs proudly displaying their means of construction and to highlight the means of construction itself as an element of style! Thus, the solid cherry wood frame is tongue and groove notched and displayed at the front of the chairs where the legs join the arms. This gives the chairs a bold look. The chairs have been refinished and have new cushions covered in cotton.
Gabriel was one of the premiere Modernist designers in France in the post war 1940...

French Mid-century Armchair, by Jean Pascaud
Vadim Androusov
By Vadim Androusov, Jean Pascaud
Located in Queens, NY
French mid-century light mahogany armchair with gilt bronze sabot feet and armrest supported by gilt bronze eagles with brown upholstery. Signed by Vadim Androusov for Jean Pascaud (ref: Les Decorateurs des annee 40, pg 172).
Jean Pascaud was born in Rouen in 1903. He took a degree in engineering from the Ecole Centrale des Arts et Manufactures, but his passion for furniture and décor, and the influence of his father in law, Auguste Bluysen, (then President of the Société des Architectes Modernes), led Pascaud to abandon a more traditional career and take up furniture design instead. By the late 1920s Pascaud regularly at the Salon des Tuileries, at the Salon d'Automne, the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs, and the Arts Ménagers. His work is simple, yet technically ambitious and brilliant; his pieces are impressively large, but aesthetically balanced.
Vadim Androusov was born in St. Petersburg in 1895. He was a grandson of the archeologist Schliemann. He arrived in Paris in 1920 and took classes at La Grande Chaumière academy; Bourdelle was one of his professors. His first sculptures date from 1925 and depict female figures and characters drawn from classical antiquity. He rarely used bronze, preferring terracotta, plaster, wood, and stone. He showed his creations at the Salon des Tuileries and the Salon des Indépendants. While a sculptor, he also collaborated with interior decorators and created wall-mounted light fixtures, furniture pulls...

19th C. French Carved Walnut Dagobert Curule Armchair with Tooled Leather
Located in Dallas, TX
This striking 19th-century French armchair is a superb example of the curule or “Dagobert” style, inspired by early medieval throne designs and reinterpreted in the Renaissance Revival tradition. Hand-carved from solid walnut and richly patinated with time, the desk chair showcases a sculptural silhouette formed by its signature X-shaped base, accented with scrolled legs and detailed stretcher supports.
Both the seat and back are upholstered in dark brown tooled leather, secured with large brass nailhead trim for a bold, architectural presence. The upper backrest is topped with ornate carved motifs including stylized foliage and wave-like trim, while the sides are decorated with foliate carvings and rolled armrests for added refinement.
Sturdy, elegant, and full of historic character, this antique curule chair...

By Aymeric Lefort
Located in SENLIS, OISE
“A Bras Ouvert” Armchair in Macassar Ebony, Fabric from” Pierre Frey Paris”. Metal legs silver patina.
Aymeric Lefort (b. France 1971)
