About the Item

The Gaulinetta is an evolution of the Gaulino chair. In words of Oscar Tusquets In homage to Enzo Mari, who called his chair Tonietta, a derivative of Thonet, I’ve called this chair Gaulinetta, after the Gaulino. The Gaulino chair was designed in 1987. BD re-edited it, improving it in 2010. It’s probably one of the best designs by Oscar Tusquets. Even though its appearance is totally artesanal, it was his first real wooden industrial project, taking into consideration the sizes of the machines, so that they could make the turns that model the legs. The result is the image of a hand carved, slender sculpture. Some critic tried to see in it the admiration for the author Salvador Dalí, however, when Tusquets saw it finished, his thoughts were that the evident influences came from Antoni Gaudí, the most universal Catalonian architect, and from Carlo Mollino, a great Italian designer from the 50’s. That’s why he called the chair, Gaulino Three different finishes: - A solid ash frame with a varnished natural finish, and seat upholstered in natural hide. - A solid ash frame with an open pore lacquered black finish, and seat upholstered in black hide. - A solid ash frame with an open pore lacquered coral red (RAL 3016) finish, and seat upholstered in a toasted hide. Oscar Tusquets describes himself as an architect by training, a designer by adaptation, a painter by vocation, and a writer through the desire to make friends. Born in Barcelona in 1941, Oscar Tusquets graduated as an architect in 1965 from Barcelona’s Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura and was a member of Studi Per, together with Pep Bonet, Cristian Cirici, Lluís Clotet, and Mireia Riera. In 1972, they founded BD together, and Tusquets set about designing furniture and other objects, which would be recognised by the Spanish National Design Award. A number of his pieces appear in renowned museum collections, such as the MoMA in New York and the Centre George Pompidou in Paris. He has also been honoured with the Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes (Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts), the insignia of Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of the Arts and Letters) and the Creu de Sant Jordi (Cross of Sant Jordi). Since the ‘90s, he has published books on a wide range of design-related topics.
