About the Item

Complete a formal living room or study with this elegant pair of antique armchairs. Crafted in France circa 1880, each large Louis XVI style "Bergère à Oreilles" stands on carved tapered and fluted legs beneath a shaped apron. The rectangular backs are crowned with a finely detailed eagle clutching a laurel wreath, flanked by two carved finials above side columns. The scrolled armrests are adorned with acanthus leaf motifs and rosettes over block joints. The chairs retain their original hand-carved walnut frames with exceptional definition and depth throughout. Both pieces are upholstered in a classic yellow silk fabric decorated with neoclassical vase and garland motifs, featuring deep, comfortable seats framed by a laurel wreath pattern. The armchairs are in very good structural condition commensurate with age and use, and display a rich walnut patina; notable wear to the fabric suggests reupholstery is needed to fully restore their grandeur. Measures: 28" W × 30" D × 42.5" H.
