About the Item
Pair of 19th century French Louis XVI style armchairs. These carved wood chairs are in a gold leaf finish and are known as marquise due to their extra wide seat, typically wider than they are deep, they were originally designed to accommodate wide dresses. These marquise are very nicely carved and have a wonderfully worn gilded finish, with good patina. The upholstery is old and has not been changed.
