Pair of Antique Walnut Wood Os De Mouton Armchairs from France, C. 1880

About the Item

Known as os de mouton (“sheep bone”), this pair of walnut armchairs were hand-carved in France, circa 1880. An H-shaped stretcher is typical of a late Louis XIII/early Louis XIV armchair and the shapely connectors flow seamlessly into the rounded legs that resemble a mutton bone, hence the name. The curvaceousness continues with the gently sloping arms, which rest on top of S-curve arm stumps. The chair back is Louis XIV style, with a fully upholstered tall backrest. Each chair has its own distinct needlepoint scene on the backrest, one with a musical theme and the other with a hunting motif. These needlepoint covers were recovered from even older armchairs, putting the creation date of the upholstery at 18th century. Both scenes feature a black background with vibrant flowers of yellow, red, and green, while the figures are cream colored with blue garments. In the musical needlepoint, a pair of winged angels are playing music as dogs, birds, and monkeys frolic in the surrounding vegetation. The other scene depicts a pair of hunters, one armed with a spear and hunting horn and the other with a bow and quiver of arrows. A small child is nearby as a deer tries to escape a pack of dogs giving chase. Both chairs are surrounded by an ecru and mauve cordonnet border. Os de Mouton chairs have a shape that is timeless and elegant, making them versatile. They can be used as dining chairs for the ends of the table or used as occasional chairs in a living room. Our pair of walnut armchairs can be used in a variety of interior styles and color schemes.

Wear consistent with age and use. Good antique condition with minor rubs to wood frames. Light wear to needlepoint upholstery. In some areas, the cordonnet border has become separated from the needlepoint (very minor).
