About the Item
A important pair of unrestored “Office cane chair”, there officially designated title, from the administrative buildings of Chandigarh, designed by and produced for Pierre Jeanneret circa 1955.
Both these example retain their original impressed location marking to the rear rail and have never been restored and clearly show the years of use to there armrests particularly, they have been authentically recaned some time ago.
These Pierre Jeanneret PJ-SI-28-D office armchair was originally designed and where used in the administrative buildings in Chandigarh, sector 1, India.
Having designed various versions the office chair, the PJ-SI-28-D is made of solid teak with the seat and backrest in braided cane work. The chair's signature "compass" leg assembly is a testament to Jeanneret's iconic design genius which also features a slightly slanted, curved backrest.
Swiss architect Jeanneret, 1896-1967, left an indelible mark on the city of Chandigarh, where he worked alongside his cousin, the renowned “Le Corbusier” in the 1950s and 1960s. Jeanneret's genius lay in his ability to adapt modernist principles to the local context, creating a unique architectural language that harmonized with the city's surroundings
If his famed cousin and longtime colleague Charles-Édouard Jeanneret — better known as Le Corbusier was the visionary, then Pierre Jeanneret was the member of the architecture and design team who got things done. In recent years, Jeanneret has emerged from Le Corbusier’s shadow, as collectors have discovered his simple and striking chairs, tables , benches and coffee tables.
These chairs are possibly the only untouched and marked versions still available and represent a pure design ethos and a unique opportunity for collectors and investors.
