Pair of English George II Style Antique Arm Chairs w/ Eagle Carvings

About the Item

This absolutely gorgeous pair of George II style walnut open arm chairs were probably crafted during the last years of the nineteenth century, possibly as late as 1910. The surfaces positively glow with a deep well worn patina beneath many layers of wax polishing, the old dings and abrasions having oxidized into deeper nut browns over time. They were created as a pair, one for the gentleman and one just slightly smaller for the lady of the house, probably intended for a sitting room or parlor. Both have balloon seats flanked by curved arm supports that raise deeply carved and highly detailed Eagle hand-rests. The chairs rest over cabriole front and back legs with interesting styling of the knee carvings, highlighted by a square molded cuff at two-thirds height of the leg. All legs terminate in padded feet. An outstanding selection for anyone with a classical interior looking for a comfortable and enjoyable pair of chairs with a depth and warmth about them, this pair was crafted to last the test of time and will certainly be a most cherished addition to any fine room. Measurements: [larger chair] 28 13/16" W x 24 1/2" D x 38 3/4" H; 18 1/2" H to seat [smaller chair] 29 5/8" W x 23 3/4" D x 36 3/8" H; 16 1/2" H to seat Condition Report: Both chairs with new upholstery in flawless condition. Larger chair has a large chip out of the back right foot, both arms of the larger chair repaired at the curl of the eagle, right arm support with old repaired cracks at joint with arm. Both chairs have some minor joint separations though they are very sturdy and strong - both chairs have minor dings, abrasions and scratches as expected beneath wax. Most of the finish on each chair appears to be original. Overall very fine condition.
