About the Item
An extremely decorative pair of French 19th century Louis XV st. Giltwood Fauteuils armchairs. Each wonderfully detailed armchair is raised on four 'S' scrolled legs decorated by foliate scrolls with acanthus leaves and seashell carvings flanked by a 'C' scroll, while the back legs display a smooth satin finish with mottled edges. The four legs are joined by a handsome 'X' shaped stretcher with a mottled trim and central rosette. The scalloped shaped apron on the front and both sides, has a central reserve of a seashell flanked by richly carved scrolled acanthus leaves along with an etched diamond design. The scrolled upholstered arms are decorated with carved designs of acanthus leaves with mottled edges that lead to the backrest. The intricately carved and extremely decorative pierced backrest has a curved top crown of a seashell flanked by scrolled acanthus leaves that extend to the top corners. Beneath the curved top is an intricately designed vertical back support with foliate sprays and intertwining 'S' and 'C' scrolls that lead to the bottom. The backside of each stunning Fauteuil armchair is finished with a smooth burnished finish from top to bottom. This handsome pair retain their original and stunning foliate needlepoint attached by brass nails.
