About the Item
A fine pair of French 19th-20th century Louis XVI style two-tone cream and green painted with parcel-giltwood carved fauteuils armchairs. The intricately carved wood frames with a padded backrest, open scrolled and padded armrests, with parcel-giltwood carved acanthus leaves and gilt 'X" cross-bands, all raised on tapered fluted legs and upholstered in a recent burgundy velvet. Paris, circa 1890-1900.

Notes: A fauteuil (French: [fotœj]) is a style of open-armchair with a primarily exposed wooden frame originating in France during the early 17th century. A fauteuil is made of wood and frequently with carved relief ornament. It is typically upholstered on the seat, the seat back and on the arms (manchettes). Some fauteuils have a valence front seat rail which is padding that extends slightly over the apron. The exposed wooden elements are often gilded or otherwise painted.
