Pair of Giovanni Michelucci Patinated Oak and Leather Armchairs, Italy, 1930s
This refined pair of armchairs, attributed to Giovanni Michelucci, captures the architectural clarity and material integrity typical of Italian Rationalist design from the 1930s. Crafted in solid oak, the chairs display Michelucci’s disciplined sense of proportion and structure—qualities that echo his later architectural works, such as Florence’s Santa Maria Novella station.
The armchairs feature sharply geometric frames with faceted armrests and a tall, dignified backrest. Both seat and back are upholstered in original brown leather, secured with decorative nailhead trim that underlines their handcrafted character. The oak shows a warm natural tone with visible grain, while the leather exhibits a very nice patina—a surface depth that only time can produce.
Their design blends functional rigor with sculptural presence, making them ideal as executive, dining, or occasional chairs. The squared oak legs, slightly darker at the ends, enhance the chairs’ solid stance and architectural appeal.
