About the Item

The “Edouard” lounge chair is often described as a “caquetoire”, or a conversation chair. This type of seating was an armchair style which emerged during the European Renaissance in France. As the name suggests, this type of chair was meant for sitting for elongated periods to chat. Generally, these chairs were also highly regarded for their aesthetic value as well, which can also be said about these exceptional chair models. The “Edouard” is a sculptural model with a blonde oak frame that is characteristic of the French designer duo. The design showcases the wide variety of shapes and forms of the solid oak frames, from the curving lines to the straighter spindles comprising the backrests. Naturally, a conversation chair needs to be first and foremost functional and comfortable, therefore the backs are slightly tilted, and the seat raised, aided by the generous seat and back cushions. The fuchsia-coloured upholstery beautifully complements the wood tone, and the small textured loops of fabric highlight the smoothness of the frames’ surface. The French caquetoire chairs were often made from walnut rather than oak, allowing the frames to be more easily carved - however, Guillerme and Chambron still preferred this more difficult (and also more appealing) wood. This fact further raises the level of craftsmanship that went into this model. Similarly to its historic predecessors, these lounge chairs were also built with traditional “invisible” joinery techniques, therefore no nails are exposed. From the carved armrests to the spindle backs, the woodworking truly shows the overall quality of these chairs. The attention to the smallest detail shows the design and manufacturing skills of Robert Guillerme and Jacques Chambron. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. These chairs come with their original upholstery or have been reupholstered by a previous owner. Each of our items can be re-upholstered by our in-house atelier in a fabric of choice. After the Second World War he moved to Lille, in the north of France, where he decorated homes and designed furniture for the well regarded Rogier workshops. In 1948, Guillerme was joined by his long-time friend, decorator Jacques Chambron in Lille. The following year Guillerme and Chambron met master cabinetmaker Émile Dariosecq, owner of a woodworking shop and the company Votre Maison was born. Together, they defined and imposed a new furniture concept. Thanks to their distinctive creativity, originality, and quality, the Votre Maison quickly became well-known. The Votre Maison marked the history of French design. Guillerme drew the furniture designs while Chambron played the part of salesman, welcoming and advising clients. The power duo was complemented by Dariosecq, whose workshop took charge of the manufacturing. Together, they defined new furnishings concepts. Well-crafted chair back, polished wood and thick cushions make the reputation of their armchairs and sofas. Votre Maison continued to produce furniture right into the 20th century, with Jacques’ son Hervé Chambron, a designer and graduate of the École Boulle, having taken the reins in 1983. ~H.

Pair of Wooden Armchairs with Upholstered Cushions, Europe 20th Century
Located in Utrecht, NL
With wedge and hammer, the chair-maker slowly creates shorter pieces to be worked into the seat, spindle, crest rail, and legs. This pair of wooden armchairs stands as a proud example of traditional design practice; their solid nail-free joints highlight the skill and artistry of its makers. This construction method enhances the armchairs’ structure and presents the reverence it deserves. This set borrows from great past examples, such as the Windsor chair or - more broadly - the spindle models widely used throughout Europe during the 20th century. These elements render this specific design truly timeless. They are among the most recognisable models of mid-century chairs in Europe. The spindle chairs are a ubiquitous classic that does just as well in the living room, dining room or even the hall, drawing every eye to it. The proportions are well-thought-out, and the see-through design adds a simple and airy touch. Each chair of this set has fifteen symmetrically arranged wooden slim spindles that form the back and armrests. A continuous arm and bow-back frame the slim spindles, offering a seamless joint from the seat and the back. The legs splay outward and run into the seat, which is a single wood piece slightly inclined to assist a more comfortable seating experience combined with the custom-made cushion upholstered in premium bouclé fabric. This model’s design is a classic that goes beyond trends, a product of a deep-rooted desire to showcase impeccable craftsmanship and a stylish aesthetic without compromising the quality of production or materials. This spindle chair set...
