About the Item

Exceptional sculptural armchairs in hand-carved solid oak with geometric reliefs and original woven cord seats, executed in the manner of Joseph Savina, France, 1930s. This rare pair of hand-carved oak armchairs originates from France and dates to the 1930s. Executed in solid oak, the chairs exemplify the spirit of French Rustique Moderne and early Art Deco, closely aligned with the Breton folk art tradition and crafted in the manner of Joseph Savina. The design is defined by its architectural construction and expressive geometric carving. The backrests feature a bold composition of carved stars, triangular reliefs, and circular motifs, while the armrests and legs are further enriched with meticulously carved pyramidal patterns. The recessed carvings retain their original darkened patina, creating a striking contrast against the warm, naturally aged oak surface. Both armchairs retain their original hand-woven cord seats, executed in a refined geometric weave and in excellent condition. The proportions are generous yet balanced, offering comfort while maintaining a strong sculptural presence. The craftsmanship and material quality clearly place these chairs beyond decorative folk furniture, positioning them as true artisan works produced in small atelier settings rather than mass production. The aesthetic language relates closely to the work of Joseph Savina and the broader Breton modernist movement of the interwar period, where traditional craftsmanship was reinterpreted through modern geometry and restrained ornamentation. The result is a pair of chairs that function equally well as functional seating and as statement pieces within refined interiors. Ideal for collectors of French Art Deco, Rustique Moderne, folk art furniture, or sculptural mid-century design. These armchairs integrate seamlessly into both classic and contemporary interiors, including gallery, brutalist, wabi-sabi, and high-end residential settings. A highly decorative and collectible pair with strong presence, authenticity, and timeless character.
