About the Item
Pair of Karin Mobring Safari Lounge Chairs in Cognac Leather, Sweden, 1970s
Description (≈300 words):
This pair of “Safari” lounge chairs was designed by Karin Mobring for IKEA, Sweden, during the 1970s. Mobring—one of IKEA’s pioneering in-house designers—created furniture that combined Nordic craftsmanship with functionalist purity, resulting in pieces that remain timelessly relevant today.
Each chair features a black lacquered solid pine frame with visible joinery and a sling construction that supports the thick cognac saddle leather seat and backrest. The leather is beautifully patinated, showing rich tonal variations and natural wear that highlight the authenticity of the material. Adjustable leather straps and metal fittings secure the seat and back in place, enhancing both comfort and flexibility.
The angular frame contrasts elegantly with the supple natural leather, expressing the Scandinavian modern ethos of honest materials and simple geometry. With their warm tone and architectural silhouette, these chairs add sculptural presence to any interior—perfect for a reading corner, lounge area, or minimalist living space.

Cognac leather Esprit safari lounge Chairs by IKEA Sweden 1970s.
Ikea designed this safari Lounge chair in the 1970s. It is made of bamboo and cognac saddle leather. The design and the look and feel of this occasional chair reminded me of what someone once taught me about good sculptures, "they look great from all angles". And what is particularly important about a chair is that it is very comfortable to sit in as well. People have very different thoughts about IKEA furniture...
