About the Item
Pair of Late 19th-Century Mahogany Hepplewhite-Style Armchairs
A very good pair of late 19th-century mahogany open armchairs in the Hepplewhite revival taste, dating to circa 1870–1885. Finely made and of substantial weight, each chair features an elegant oval back with crisply carved moulded frames and a pierced splat of interlaced, serpentine forms centred by a rosette. The sweeping arms are beautifully shaped with scrolled terminals, flowing into square, tapering front legs and slightly splayed rear supports, all united by H-stretchers for added strength.
The seats are traditionally upholstered and covered in a high-quality dark blue horsehair fabric, finished with brass stud edging. The design, timber quality and workmanship place these firmly within the better class of 19th-century cabinetmaking, reflecting the enduring popularity of Hepplewhite’s neoclassical patterns during the Victorian period.
Also in stock are a similar set of 6 dining chairs from the same cabinet maker, with similar details and matching upholstery.
Dimensions (approximate):
Height: 97 cm (38 ¼ in)
Width: 65 cm (25 ½ in)
Depth: 54.5 cm (21 ½ in)
Seat Height: 45.75 cm (18 in)
Condition:
Structurally very sound throughout with no loose joints. The frames are of good dense mahogany and retain an attractive, well-preserved surface with only minor marks and small running repairs consistent with age and use. Upholstery is structurally very good; the horsehair fabric shows light blemishes but remains presentable and serviceable. Carefully cleaned and waxed, and ready for immediate use. As with all antique furniture, subtle signs of age form an integral part of the character and authenticity of the chairs.

Pair of Upholstered Hepplewhite Shield-Back Armchairs w Provenance, circa 1870s
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This exquisite pair of circa 1870s Hepplewhite style 'Shield-Back' armchairs are exquisite. We believe the wood to be crafted from solid Mahogany with intricate detailed carved details.
The upholstered back and arms provide additional comfort from the traditional open back style of standard Hepplewhite chairs. Acquired from English Antiques specialist Dillingham & Company in 1998, a copy of the receipt is attached in the photo gallery.
These 19th Century antique shield back arm chairs would work great in a Mid-Century Modern, Scandanavian Modern or Danish Modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a Contemporary or Post-Modern room. Also consider mixing it up in a Traditional, Transitional, Classical or Art Deco room with a splash of juxtaposition. Would also be an apt choice in a commercial project such as a hotel lobby lounge or members club, creative design studio or high-rise executive office. Consider using as side chairs, dining, cafe or breakfast table chairs...
