About the Item

Pair of Model H-269 Armchairs by Jindřich Halabala An exceptional and rare pair of original Model H-269 armchairs, designed by the legendary Czech modernist Jindřich Halabala and produced by UP Závody in Czechoslovakia circa 1930s. This model is recognised as one of the most iconic pieces of 20th-century Czech design, admired for its sculptural bent-beech frame and timelessly elegant silhouette — a true emblem of the First-Republic modernist era. Each armchair has been meticulously restored. The beautifully curved beechwood frames have been refinished to highlight the natural grain and satin sheen of the wood, while the seats have been newly upholstered in luxurious Icelandic sheep wool. This exceptional natural textile — sourced from Icelandic sheep and distinguished by fibres reaching up to 15 cm in length — is prized for its dual-layer structure: a glossy, long outer coat and a soft, insulating inner fleece. The result is a fabric of remarkable softness, durability, breathability, and natural resilience. The long fibres create a visually striking, tactilely rich surface that perfectly complements the sculptural form of Halabala’s design. The combination of this rare natural material and the organic geometry of the H-269 armchairs results in a composition of extraordinary elegance and authenticity. Both visually and materially, these pieces represent the essence of functional modernist luxury. From a collector’s perspective, the Model H-269 stands among the most coveted and recognisable designs of the interwar Czechoslovak period. Its sophisticated form and superb craftsmanship continue to command strong interest on the international design market, securing its status as a timeless investment piece.
