About the Item

A pair of large scale mahogany armchairs highly carved and inlaid throughout. The shield-shaped backs are centered by a painted armorial crest within a beaded oval. Surrounding the crest are applied carvings including various Neo-Classical motifs such as anthemion, urns, draped swags, and bow-tied ribbons. All of this is surrounded by burr walnut banding enclosed within a strip of guilloche carving. The reverse side of the back is similarly done but with the Neo-Classical elements in boxwood marquetry as opposed to carving. The sides of the back are surmounted by beautifully carved rams' heads above trailing husks. All of the fine carving continues on the shaped arms, seat rails, and tapering legs. Very large size and comfortable. In the manner of Wright and Mansfield.
