About the Item

A refined pair of Chinese armchairs, crafted in solid elmwood and likely dating to the Qing Dynasty period (1644–1912), late 19th to early 20th century (we are listing this as 'attributed to late Qing Dynasty but cannot guarantee this). These chairs exemplify the traditional "horseshoe-back" or yoke-back design, distinguished by a graceful sweeping crest rail and inset panels with delicately hand-carved floral motifs. The carving work is deeply sculpted, featuring stylized peony and orchid designs, both long-standing symbols of virtue and refinement in Chinese decorative culture. Constructed using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, the frames are composed of what appears to be Southern elm (commonly referred to as jumu), a wood frequently used in Qing furniture for its strength, warmth, and expressive grain. The surfaces exhibit a beautiful aged patina consistent with age and use. These authentic surface variations contribute to their quiet elegance and speak to the chairs’ long history and careful hand-craftsmanship. Perfect as accent chairs or occasional chairs, these pieces function well in a range of interiors, from traditional to boho to wabi-sabi minimalism, and would be ideal as hall chairs, reading chairs, cigar chairs, lobby chairs, dining captain's chairs, or even entryway chairs. Pair of Upholstered Hepplewhite Shield-Back Armchairs w Provenance, circa 1870s
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This exquisite pair of circa 1870s Hepplewhite style 'Shield-Back' armchairs are exquisite. We believe the wood to be crafted from solid Mahogany with intricate detailed carved details. The upholstered back and arms provide additional comfort from the traditional open back style of standard Hepplewhite chairs. Acquired from English Antiques specialist Dillingham & Company in 1998, a copy of the receipt is attached in the photo gallery. These 19th Century antique shield back arm chairs would work great in a Mid-Century Modern, Scandanavian Modern or Danish Modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a Contemporary or Post-Modern room. Also consider mixing it up in a Traditional, Transitional, Classical or Art Deco room with a splash of juxtaposition. Would also be an apt choice in a commercial project such as a hotel lobby lounge or members club, creative design studio or high-rise executive office. Consider using as side chairs, dining, cafe or breakfast table chairs...
