About the Item
Pair of Italian Art Nouveau Armchairs in Original Red Velvet, Hand-Carved Wood, Georges de Feure Style, circa 1900-1910
This elegant pair of Italian Art Nouveau armchairs represents a distinguished example of decorative refinement and high artisanal craftsmanship, embodying the Liberty style of the early twentieth century. Made in Italy between 1900 and 1910 by a highly skilled yet unidentified cabinetmaker (unknown artist), the armchairs combine a finely executed wooden structure with the rare preservation of their original materials.
he solid wood structure is animated by exquisitely hand-carved floral and vegetal motifs, with flowing, sinuous lines that echo the organic vocabulary of Art Nouveau. The pierced backrests, defined by a central sculpted stem and stylized blossom, create a rhythmic dialogue between structure and ornament, lightness and solidity. The gently curved legs and arm supports further enhance the sense of movement characteristic of the period.
Both armchairs retain their original, vibrant red velvet upholstery-an exceptional survival-whose luminous surface and deep chromatic intensity amplify the sculptural quality of the carved frames. The velvet's patina bears witness to age while preserving its original brilliance, contributing significantly to the historical integrity of the pair.
The design language strongly recalls the refined, symbolist elegance associated with Georges de Feure, particularly in the balance between decorative richness and controlled linearity. This pair is documented in Il Mobile del Novecento (DeAgostini), confirming its relevance within the canon of early modern decorative arts and Italian interpretations of the Art Nouveau movement.
A highly evocative ensemble, these armchairs are ideal for collectors seeking museum-quality examples of European Art Nouveau seating, combining rarity, original materials, and documented provenance.
