About the Item

These Sanluca armchairs by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for Gavina, upholstered in deep blue velvet and produced in Italy during the 1960s, represent one of the most recognisable expressions of post-war Italian modern design. The Sanluca model was conceived as a study of comfort and sculptural form, using a sequence of curved components that follow the natural contours of the body. This structural approach gives the armchairs their distinctive silhouette and highlights the Castiglioni brothers’ ability to merge experimentation, ergonomics and industrial clarity. The original blue velvet upholstery, characteristic of Gavina’s early production, is exceptionally well preserved, showing no tears and only minimal age-related wear. The wooden legs remain clean and scratch-free, contributing to the strong overall presentation. The armchairs provide generous seating and retain their full structural integrity, offering both visual impact and everyday usability. As a key design by two major figures of 20th-century Italian design, this pair is well suited for collectors, curated interiors, and modern environments seeking historically significant seating from the 1960s.
