About the Item
Pair of Spanish Colonial Throne Chairs, Early 20th Century
This magnificent pair of Spanish Colonial throne chairs, dating from the early 1900s, captures the grandeur and authority of colonial craftsmanship. Standing at an imposing 1.53 meters high at the backrest, these chairs were conceived not simply as seating, but as statements of presence and power, evoking the ceremonial dignity of ecclesiastical and aristocratic interiors of Latin America.
Carved in rich tropical hardwood with a deep, warm patina, each chair is distinguished by its high, pierced backrest, crowned with a stylized scallop shell motif flanked by elegant scrolls. The elongated silhouette accentuates the verticality, giving the impression of thrones meant to dominate a space. The arms are powerfully scrolled, lending sculptural movement, while the robust cabriole legs terminate in claw feet and are joined by a curving stretcher for added stability and grace.
The seats are traditionally caned, offering both durability and lightness, in contrast to the robust architecture of the frame. This combination of delicacy and strength exemplifies the colonial reinterpretation of European Baroque and Rococo forms, adapted to the materials and tastes of the Americas.
Such pieces would have originally been commissioned for elite households, convents, or municipal chambers, where they signified authority, hierarchy, and continuity with Iberian traditions. Today, they stand as highly decorative yet functional works of art, ideal for lending an aura of nobility to a refined interior.
A rare opportunity to acquire an authentic pair of Spanish Colonial throne chairs that command both attention and respect.

Pair of 19th Century Brazilian Empire Armchairs in Carved Tropical Hardwood
A striking and authentic pair of Brazilian armchairs from the second half of the 19th century, crafted in richly grained tropical hardwood—most likely jacarandá or another noble native species. Embodying the graceful elegance of the Brazilian Empire period, these pieces combine classical European influence with regional craftsmanship, resulting in a form that is both sculptural and historically evocative.
Each chair presents beautifully shaped lines, with gently curved legs and arm supports, and a caned seat restored using traditional methods. The backrests are adorned with finely hand-carved floral and shell motifs, emblematic of the Luso-Brazilian decorative language of the time. The lower splats echo this detail in harmonious proportion, adding refinement and rhythm to the composition.
The surface retains a charming, timeworn patina, enriched by subtle wear and age that speak to the authenticity and dignity of these pieces. Their scale and presence make them ideal for use as statement accent chairs in living rooms, salons, libraries, or conservatories.
Rare to find in matched pairs, these armchairs would suit both collectors of colonial and imperial Latin American furniture...
