About the Item

The first golden age of Scandinavian design took place from the 1930s through the 1970s. During this period, furniture designers created works that offered unique twists on tradition, that would soon become prized for their innovative features, exemplified by this pair of armchairs. Sven Larsson's designs were characterised by their functional and practical qualities, as well as their simple, understated aesthetic. While the main principles of Swedish Modernism centre around minimalism, simplicity and functionalism, cabinetmakers like Larsson also liked to try their hands at wooden ornamentation. These armchairs achieve to follow the basic principles while also offering plenty of visually arresting qualities, which include the sculpted legs, the ladder back, and the cushions covered in upholstery adorned with buttons. The pine frame is visually arresting, defined by the sculpted legs that reach up to support the armrests. Swedish cabinetmakers relied on solid wood in order to provide the excellent structure and durability that it delivers. Generally, lighter coloured woods, such as pine, were chosen so that the material could stand out as an important design feature. The wood here was beautifully moulded under the hands of the master cabinetmaker, creating unparalleled shapes and smoothness. The pine’s grain and pattern is very appealing throughout the design, which adds an organic touch to the look. This pair displays a beautiful contrast between the light wooden frame’s colour and the elegant off-white fabric of the cushions. The craftsmanship of these chairs is without a doubt of the highest quality, and Sven Larsson had a great sense of proportions. This beautifully crafted pair of armchairs lives up to its Swedish heritage both in terms of design and quality, which are further elevated by the luxurious bouclé upholstery.
