About the Item

A sculptural composition of balance and comfort, this pair of “Tiki” armchairs encapsulates the spirit of postwar Italian design, where organic form met engineered innovation. Design Designed and produced by Busnelli in the 1960s, each chair features a fibreglass-reinforced shell with generous, contoured seating, newly reupholstered in textured ochre fabric. The bucket-like form is engineered for comfort, tapering at the edges into an almost aerodynamic profile. These shells rest within an elegant wooden framework crafted in dark-stained beech, identifiable by its gently bowed stretcher supports and subtly tapering legs. The arms are particularly refined: long, flowing curves, carved with a fluid rhythm, offering both functional support and sculptural presence. Viewed in profile, they introduce a lyrical contrast to the geometric strength of the base. This meeting of organic and architectural elements is what gives the “Tiki” series its distinctive presence. Busnelli, founded in Brianza in 1953, became known for working with advanced materials and pushing the expressive limits of upholstered furniture. These armchairs reflect that ethos. Though precise attribution to a named designer is uncertain, the design aligns with Italy's ergonomic and formal research of the late 1960s, possibly echoing the influence of figures like Ico Parisi or Gianfranco Frattini. We also have the matching two-seater bench available. Condition Condition is excellent. Both chairs have been fully restored and reupholstered. Minor traces of age on the woodwork remain visible, but add to the character of the pieces.

Wingback Armchairs In Poplar And Mohair By Orlando Orlandi, Italy 1950 s
By Orlando Orlandi

Not much is known about Milanese architect Orlando Orlandi except that he worked with Gio Ponti for a certain period of time. It has been suggested by various sources that this specific design is also a fruit of their collaboration, but this has not been confirmed. It may be assumed that the gentlemen shared their avant-garde formal language. Graceful, powerful and very architectonic. Imagine a décor from a Luca Guadagnino...
