About the Item

An exceptionally rare pair of Dutch modernist armchairs designed by Paul Schuitema and produced by Fana Metaal, Rotterdam, in the 1950s. These chairs embody the radical clarity and functional elegance that define early post-war European modernism. This particular set is distinguished by its continuous tubular steel back construction, a highly uncommon and seldom-seen variant. The uninterrupted flow of the chromed steel tube creates a refined linear rhythm, emphasizing movement, balance, and industrial precision. The contrast between the cool metal frame, warm upholstered seat and backrest, and original Bakelite armrests results in a composition that is both sculptural and highly functional. The olove soft green upholstery enhances the architectural form while adding a subtle mid-century colour accent, making these chairs suitable for both residential and curated design interiors. Rare Edition This pair features a trare continuous tube backres, a design detail that significantly elevates its collectability and places it among the more exceptional examples of Schuitema’s furniture designs. About the Designer Paul Schuitema (1897–1973) Paul Schuitema was a pioneering Dutch modernist, closely associated with De Stijl, Nieuwe Zakelijkheid, and early functionalist design. Best known as a graphic designer and typographer, Schuitema also applied his rational, socially driven design philosophy to furniture and industrial objects. His work is represented in major museum collections and is increasingly sought after by collectors of European modernism. Pair of “Rubber Band” Chairs by Tom Dixon, UK, 2005
By Tom Dixon
Located in DE KWAKEL, NL
Originally conceived in the Tom Dixon studio as an experimental café-style chair, the “Rubber Band” was first assembled from rubber bands and paper clips. In its final form, oversized rubber bands are stretched across a simple galvanized steel frame to create a seat that is both bouncy and supportive. The design is a playful yet radical exploration of materiality and form, reflecting Dixon’s view of furniture as functional sculpture. Extremely rare on the market, these chairs are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, and represent a striking moment in contemporary British design. About the designer Tom Dixon (b. 1959, Tunisia) is a British designer renowned for his industrial, material-driven approach to contemporary design.
