About the Item
Exceptional pair of vintage armchairs (often referred to as “carvers”) that perfectly embody the refined taste of the Neoclassical/Federal Period, strongly influenced by the designs of George Hepplewhite. High-quality reproductions from the 1990s, these chairs feature a classic, graceful silhouette. The frames are crafted from solid mahogany hardwood with a luxurious, deep dark mahogany gloss finish. The defining characteristic is the beautifully carved, open Shield Back, featuring an intricate pierced splat, which sits above gently scrolled arms and delicate tapering legs. This construction is a timeless example of formal, traditional furniture.
Seats have been reupholstered in a rare and sophisticated fabric that gives these chairs a tailored, contemporary appeal. The pattern is technically a Glen Plaid (or Prince of Wales Check), a complex weave traditionally associated with fine menswear and luxury goods. The pattern is built upon a tight, monochromatic micro-check of black and cream Puppytooth/Houndstooth. This is then masterfully overlaid with thin, contrasting lines of muted red (claret) and mustard yellow (gold), creating a striking "Prep Chic" or "Ralph Lauren Estate" aesthetic.
The chairs are in excellent late vintage condition, structurally sound, and ready to be placed as elegant host seating, stunning library accent chairs, flanking a fireplace, gracing an entrance or a stylish pair in any space.

Pair of Upholstered Hepplewhite Shield-Back Armchairs w Provenance, circa 1870s
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This exquisite pair of circa 1870s Hepplewhite style 'Shield-Back' armchairs are exquisite. We believe the wood to be crafted from solid Mahogany with intricate detailed carved details.
The upholstered back and arms provide additional comfort from the traditional open back style of standard Hepplewhite chairs. Acquired from English Antiques specialist Dillingham & Company in 1998, a copy of the receipt is attached in the photo gallery.
These 19th Century antique shield back arm chairs would work great in a Mid-Century Modern, Scandanavian Modern or Danish Modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a Contemporary or Post-Modern room. Also consider mixing it up in a Traditional, Transitional, Classical or Art Deco room with a splash of juxtaposition. Would also be an apt choice in a commercial project such as a hotel lobby lounge or members club, creative design studio or high-rise executive office. Consider using as side chairs, dining, cafe or breakfast table chairs...
