About the Item

1.708 / 5.000 The MP-41 armchair, designed by Brazilian designer Percival Lafer in the 1960s, is an icon of Brazilian modernism, known for its bold, innovative, and comfortable design, reflecting the mid-century modern aesthetic. Originally produced by Móveis Lafer (Lafer's family company, which he took over after graduating with a degree in architecture from Mackenzie University in São Paulo in 1961), this armchair is part of the MP-41 series, which also includes matching sofas and ottomans. Lafer, founded in 1936, aimed to make good design accessible to everyone, not just the elite, through mass production using high-quality materials such as exotic woods and fine leathers, often destined for export to the USA and Europe until the 1980s. The MP-41's structure is angular and geometric, with square legs and armrests and exposed joints that emphasize the architectural structure, typical of Lafer's Brutalist-minimalist style. Metal elements (such as polished or black steel rods or supports) are visible at the connections, adding a modern and functional touch. The upholstery is the true protagonist: covered in leather (cognac or tan, with an aged patina that lends warmth and character), it features deep, enveloping tufted padding (with quilted buttons), creating a suspended "hammock" effect. The seat, backrest, and armrest cushions are plump and soft, with natural folds in the leather suggesting ergonomic comfort and a deep seat. The suspension system uses leather or elastic mesh straps under the seat, allowing for optimal flexibility and support, making it ideal for relaxation.
